Artist Bio:

Tricia Bishop was born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and raised in Grenada.  Her initial formal art training took place at Saint Joseph’s Convent, St. Georges where she attended classes outside of regular school hours.  First noticed at the Grenada National College for her oil and acrylic painting style, she received regional recognition and many awards.  One of her acrylic works now hangs on permanent display at the Embassy of Grenada, in Washington, DC.

In 1995, she entered Howard University in Washington, DC where she changed her artistic focus from two-dimensional painting to three-dimensional works in clay.  At Howard University, Tricia studied directly under the African-American ceramist, Professor Winnie Owens-Hart who taught the unique hand-building technique learned from the women of the village of Impetumodo, Nigeria. She Graduated in 2000 Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Howard University, Washington DC. Then in 2000 she attended a summer workshop at the school of Ceramics at Alfred University. She has worked in the United Kingdom with Mrs. Jane Perryman, renowned Ceramist, and Author of ceramic Books who specializes in smoke-mark firing. This technique uses natural organic materials to achieve colors and designs on clay. She has also studied in Italy with Giovanni Cimatti, also a renowned Ceramist who specializes in terra sigillata, a surface technique invented by the ancient Romans. Under the guidance of David MacDonald, Margie Hughto and Errol Willett, Ms. Bishop completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at Syracuse University in the spring of 2004. She has also been a past Lecturer of Ceramics at Wells College in Aurora, NY and is presently teaching as an Associate Professor in the Arts Department of Houghton College, Houghton NY.

A recent newspaper article:

Ceramic artist Tricia Bishop has been named a Merit Award winner for the July 2006 Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft. Only six artists in five categories were selected from hundreds of applications.

Based in Fillmore, Bishop creates abstract forms based on the human figure using ancient hand building and glazing techniques. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Howard University.

The Merit Award is designed to help emerging artists successfully enter the wholesale marketplace. Winners receive free booth space and are assigned a mentor to guide them through their entrance into the wholesale American craft community.

To be considered for the award, the artist must be new to the wholesale marketplace and have innovative design ideas, creative works and market viability.

The Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft is the nation's largest wholesale marketplace for American and Canadian artists and retailers. Held bi-annually, the Buyers Market features nearly 2,000 exhibitors and attracts more than 9,000 buyers from 3,000 companies nationwide.
